Sweeping, Astro Style

I've learned a lot about this world of Marching Band Competitions in the past 4 years, none of which I even knew existed before Colin started as a freshman. Who knew that bands competed against each other? Or that there were actual judges, points, scoring, and Grand Champions? Who knew that you aren't penalized if you drop your flag or if you run a judge over on the field? I never even knew what a Drum Major did, more or less that they have their own little "gig" before they begin their performance. Gees, where was I all these years?

We've learned that you need to dress warm, pack coats, mittens, hats, blankets, and anything else you have to keep the chill at bay. We look like Nanook of the North heading into the stands, even though the sun is shining warm and the thermometer reads 70 degrees. No sooner does the sun go down and the dew appears on the grassy field, and soon, we are freezing our hinies off while we watch 6 hours of marching band madness. There is nothing chillier on your butt than some metal bleachers, I can tell you from experience. Bleacher seats are another mandatory item--I'm not joking when I tell you we look like pack mules loaded with gear to survive the evening.

The Marching Astros swept their category Saturday night, earning Best Drum Major, Best Auxiliary, Best Percussion, Best Overall Effect, Best Music, and First Place overall. We were in a small category, but the win was nothing short of fabulous just the same. The sight of the kids screaming with excitement on the opposing bleachers was fantastic and the orange and brown-clad parents on our side were jumping out of their seats.

If you have never been, marching band competitions are full of rigid performance schedules, timed performances, and organized maneuvering of uniformed musicians, band parents loading and unloading equipment onto the field, and strict rules regarding movement of the audience members during a performance. There is a decorum to be followed and the silence of the crowd is something to behold. All is rewarded with the most incredible music and precision choreography that you can ever imagine. It is the highlight of my fall each year.

At the end of the evening, all of the Drum Majors come out and line up on the sidelines of the field to accept the awards. And as each of the awards were called, the stands erupted into screams and cheers as Ted, our Drum Major, proudly accepted award after award. It was incredible to hear our name after the dreaded silence following the announcement of each award.

At the end of all the awards, there is one award given for the highest score overall, combining all of the categories--Grand Champion. No, we didn't win that--but it wasn't like we weren't hoping. But this year, they had a special award for Best Overall Drum Major and our Ted won that, so he was the declared Grand Champion of Drum Majors. It was then that the crowd really exploded with cheers.

You remember Ted--Dream Kid. He's not only extremely talented in so many aspects of his life, but also the greatest kid too. I've adopted him as one of my own, although he doesn't know it yet--but I did tell his parents so. They didn't flinch when I told them I was adopting their son--I think they must get that a lot.

So, yes, Dream Kid wows the crowd and wins a scholarship for himself. And to see him win was like seeing my own kid win--I was hootin' and hollerin' like a nut. It's good to see a good kid get something he deserves and more.

We only have 3 competitions this year, down from our usual 4 or 5, so I'm a bit disappointed. It is really rewarding to see such talented young people do something so incredible. I wonder how I missed this all these years and didn't know this was going on in the world.

I also wonder at what age did sitting in bleachers for a few hours cause me to walk like an old woman the next day.

Congrats to the Astros and to Drum Major Ted! The deserving pay off for all those practices.

Please tell me you have bought yourself a seat cushion for a barrier between your toush and the metal bleacher?

We may not have had a competition this weekend but we got exciting news nonetheless. Marching happiness all bound.

Congratulations on the win! It sounds like lots of fun. Bleachers are THE most unforgiving seat for your back. After six hours, if you are walking at all, you're doin alright.

Congrats on the winning and hard work! I didn't know that the competition can be that tough. You've make me see Marching Band in the different light Lin.

Congratulations on the great win! I've never been to a band competition but a have a friend who played drums in a marching band and he now teaches drum line at a local high school. He says there is nothing like a marching band competition. I just may have to seek one out this fall :)

Happy Monday,
Jen

I was in band in high school and in college at the University of Alabama. It was some of the best times in my younger years and it teaches great lessons.

I didn't know that they competed either.. so cool! I'm proud of your newly adopted son, that rocks. If I remember correctly from your previous post, the scholarship will really help his family out. Also, woo hoo to your regular old kids for their awards.

Congrats on all the wins! Not that winning is everything, but I'm sure it makes up a bit for the cold metal bleachers. Reminds me of my dad and bro who go sit through snow to watch Penn State...the die hards know to bring the bleacher chairs, blankets, and wear water proof stuff. There's always some kid next to them complaining the whole time about how his jeans are frozen to his you know whats.

Also, thanks for recommending "A Walk in the Woods". It took me months to get through my last book...a bit tedious. This one is a nice change; easy flowing, entertaining, funny. Love it so far!

Congrats to the dream kid! Do you have those stadium seats with the backs? Those help a ton!

Fran's Dad--It was a great night! Good to see them perform again.

Jodi--Yes, we have stadium seats, but there is just that chill that seems to radiate straight past the flesh into the old bones. It was a great night for the kids in spite of the cold--they don't notice it anyway! Congrats on your good news!

DG-How come I don't remember getting stiff back in high school days?? Sigh.

VanillaSeven--Yeah, it is a lot of hard work and talent combined. It is truly something to see--but I just wish it was under warmer conditions! :)

Jen--And you can tell your friend that drumline is my absolute favorite part of every performance! I LOVE those crazy crab-walking, stick-twirling percussion pallies. And my kid isn't even in drumline--go figure! Go Drumline!

April--Yea, April!! And it amazes me the great memories that band kids have of those days. I wish I was in band! :( So, what did you play?

Casey--It is amazing that all of this goes on in football stadiums all across the country. It really is something to see and hear, but I guess even more so when my kids are out there. I think you should commence brain-washing on your kids NOW! :)

A. Marie--Oh, WOW! Congratulations on your win too!! Yeah! Isn't it fun to see the kids so excited and happy?! What a great feeling for them (and us!)! I can't wait to see your band at U of I.

Wendy--I think it was you and I who was making the most noise for those kids in the stands! Especially for Ted! Sweet win, wasn't it??

Pricilla--Nice to see them win for all of their hard work. I'm such a mom, aren't I?? :)

Nancy--Only those who have suffered dearly know to buy stadium chairs, pocket warmers, long underwear, and blankets. You wise up with time on those bleachers! Glad you liked the book--I laughed out loud on that one.

Jackie--Isn't band fun???! wow! State titles, eh?! Very cool. Aren't those nice memories to have?? I wonder if the kids enjoy it half as much as we do?!

Lola--Thanks! Oh, we've got to catch up, pally.

Beaded Tail--Oh, how I wish every kid could feel that joy!

Lynne--Thanks. They are a great bunch of talented, nice kids.

Veronica--I'm working on a video post to bore you all to death. Stay tuned.....

Violet--We have some great ones with backs, arms, and little pockets to stick those hand warmers in. Still, my body rebels the next day. Sigh.

Dream Boy won a scholarship? Too cool! I'm also thrilled that that band did so well. It's got to be such a great feeling to be sitting on the sidelines and hearing their name called out.

You totally made me remember an orange item my mom had to sit on in the hockey bleachers. It was like a cushion that was bright orange, ala the hunting gear, and it had some sort of Styrofoam balls inside that were supposed to create heat somehow.

Do they still make those?

Stay warm and congratulations!

Chocolate--Isn't amazing on how the kids' achievements make you giddy when you are a mom? I never understood that until I was a mom myself.

CG--So, it's like the opposite of a cooling pad for the laptop? I've never heard of that, but I do have a stadium chair complete with back, arms, and a little pocket for those hand warmers. I'm not sure anything less than climate controlled indoor seating complete with recliners would make me happy after 6 hours of competition!

that's awesome! congrats! hopefully ours will be like that (but I'm not holding my breath...lol) small bands get shafted down here

sorry about you feeling like an old woman. some of the parents i've encounteered over my band career tend to get up and move around between bands so that they're not sitting in the same spot the whole time. maybe that'll help.

Mystery Man--I've learned to sit way up at the top, then you can stand between performances and use an umbrella should it rain. It's a great viewing place, but it does get a bit chilly up there. What's up with the small band thing?? That's crazy!
