Momma Mia! How Can I Resist Ya?

I've been listening to a new radio station at work for a couple of weeks now. Being that I write a lot on my job, I cannot listen to wacky radio banter and expect the words that come out of me to sound sane. Come to think of it, I can't listen to inane wacky radio banter in any circumstance.

The station I listen to now is one of those nationwide corporate stations that is computer generated, so there is no time, temp, news, or obnoxious hosts who blather on about nothing. And although they play some great 70's, 80's and 90's favs, they tend to be on a giant loop and I hear the same songs each day--but sort of mixed up. I think they secretly just turn the loop on at different times so that your brain thinks it's a new mix each day. I usually like the songs, so that doesn't really bother me much. I just sing along and think "Didn't I hear that yesterday?". Yeah, probably.

I typically don't mind the repetition except for one song that is driving me nuts. It's my daily humjob--you know, the song that keeps running in your head long after it's over on the radio? Mine is "Momma Mia" by Abba. Kill me now.

I type singing Momma Mia. I write articles singing Momma Mia. I eat, pee, email, and make copies to Momma Mia. I come home and sing Momma Mia to the cats and nobody in particular. It's on a giant loop in my brain and it is driving me nuts.

Now my cube mate, Irene--she's another story. She's all "Turn it up! I LOVE Momma Mia!" and singing along with me and Jan or whatever his name is. She's digging that song and I want to rip my ears off. She's all happy back there in here cubicle clicking away in time to Abba, and me--well, I know the words now and I never did before. It is not a good sign.

I'm hoping by sending this song onto to your brain to loop over and over again, that it will somehow spare me another day of this. Please, someone stop the madness.

Momma Mia, I hate this song.

Lin you know what my solution is, right?

Wouldn't you rather hear Bette sing about Baby Jane than ABBA singing Mamma Mia?

Yes. Yes you would.

"...she could dance, she could sing. Jane could do most anything..."

JODI said...

Cardio Girl easy on Bette, she's my fav. How 'bout we all sing "Do You Wanna Dance"?

Lin, don't laugh but each summer for vacation we pick a "best of" album for our girls to learn [all the words too]-- this summer ABBA. You could invite the Avery Girls to your office to serenade you to the best of ABBA~LOL

Ok, so I finally get that stinkin' Eddie Rabbit song out of my head and then you go and put this one in. Thanks.

It could be worse! I keep thinking that I have the theme song of Camp Rock stuck in my head.....and then I realize it is just my daughter singing......really, really off key.

Whew! I dodged a bullet. Fortunately, I don't know the song, so it won't be bugging me.
Nice try.

I think ABBA came to Ravinia not long ago. I thought ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
Then I saw Pierce Brosnan in the movie version. Phewwwwwww love that man.
Which station do you listen to-I couldn't figure it out but then I am all US99 and KLOVE with a touch of 94.7 and 93.9

Mamma Mia, here I go again !!!

Thanks for posting the music video. I enjoy ABBA. This one isn't my favorite, but it's okay by me. Hey, it's better than, say Nine Inch Nails.

Now if you can just help me get Megadeth doing "Symphony of Destruction" out of my head . . .

OMG, don't send that song to me...I loathed Abba back in the day and I still do!

I despise that song too! And quite frankly, ABBA can take a flying leap and it wouldn't hurt my feelings.

Oh No...I have read all these comments and now I have the strangest combo of songs running thru my head!

Quick..must think of something else to hum along to.....

What you have is called an "ear worm". To get rid of it, you simply walk up to someone, anyone, and sing the phrase that is stuck in your mind. You have now given it to that person and you are done with it. Try it. It works.

OK, so funny you should mention this song, cause remember in December when the Mama Mia movie came out. Yeah. I rented it, I'll bust myself on that one. Watched it two days before my brother-in-law's funeral. Have you ever been at a funeral with Mama Mia going through your obnoxious-jokemeiser-skull? Does the word inappropriate come to mind? *eyeroll*

All I have to say is at least you get to listen to a station that you mostly enjoy, not muzak. The muzak version of Mama Mia is much less tolerable.

CG--I'm not sure which is the lesser hell here. Both make me wince from ear pain. I think Baby Jane might be a tad bit shorter????

Jodie--Uh, yeah, no. I think I'm gonna have to pass on that. The only thing worse than an ABBA song is a WHOLE ALBUM!!! ARrrgghh!

Merry--I think this one is worse, don't you??! Sorry.

Meghan--LOL! And I thought ABBA was bad!

Vanilla--Oh, I think you should listen to it a few more times. It may sneak up and invade your mind while you sleep!

Helene--ABBA??? At Ravinia?? What are they--100 years old??? Yikes. Have to pass on that one. 100.3 is the station. No chatting!

Veronica--I think if they ever had a faux ABBA band, it would be you and me all the way! Can't you just see it??

Chuck--Yeah, but you can understand the music and it doesn't hurt your ears like Nine Inch Nails, so then it creeps in and sits there......forever and ever. Ugh. It's a slow torture.

Rocks--Yeah, me too! And I can proudly say I never knew the words until NOW!! Ugh!

Violet--They're kind of creepy, aren't they?? And those guys! Eeeek.

A. Marie--Sorry. But if I have to suffer, I shall share the misery. :)

Mother Goose--I did that! I sang it at home and now Joe is singing it too! So, he sort of gives it back again. Ugh.

Aria--Now perhaps I might enjoy the song at my funeral (or someone else's)! It beats funeral songs I guess. "And he will lift you up, on Eagle's wings.....)

Lola--Really??! There's a worse version??? Not possible, I say.

Should've known, I stop at that station too every so often.

Village People came to Ravinia a few years ago. You have not lived until you witness the drunk North Shore doing YMCA conga line style.

LIN IS JEALOUS MY FAMILY KNOWS ALL THE WORDS TO ABBA'S GREATEST HITS ;-) LOL

ADMIT IT!

The song with Meryl Streep singing it has ran in my head since I saw the movie.

Dang, I just got Crazy Horses out of my head. Guess I'll be cleaning the house to the Mama Mia loop that has taken over in my skull.

Christy said...

god, I LOVE ABBA! So catchy, fun & amazingly bouncy. The perfect pop music. Thanks for putting it in my head!

Pricilla said...

Right now I am listening to Bruce singing Born to Run....now that is a song I could listen to day and night.

I guess it's the Jersey Girl in me.

Give in and embrace the earworm. It's the only way it will leave. Then you won't notice the song everyday so much. You soap package will go out Monday. I have been buried under feathers. The poor chickens (or at least 35 of them are in the freezer) *sigh* Farm life.

Uh, I love that song? LOL :)

Hey girl! Look, I'm so sorry for not sending you a BIRTHDAY hello sooner. Life has been cuh-razee!

And -- Mamma Mia...LOVE it! Seriously, my hubby got me hooked on ABBA. I have one of their CDs, and I have the Mamma Mia DVD. LOVE it! LOL! But -- I hope you can soon get that song replaced with one you like better. LOL! Most of the songs in my head are the ones from the darn cartoonish shows watched here in this house...LOL!

I have to say that I watched that train wreck of a movie a few weeks back and I'm still devastated that I'll never get that time back. On the flip side, I've currently had a particular kid's show song stuck in my head for two weeks and Mama Mia! is sounding pretty damn appealing.

Veronica Lee said...

How about calling ourselves 'Bjorn again'??!!

Lin said...

Helene--LOL! I've got that visual, thanks!! Yeah, I'm sure that was NOT pretty!

Jodi--I'm just jealous that you can get the WHOLE family to do anything!!! Even Dad sings ABBA too??!

Jude--I never saw the movie--but I heard she couldn't sing very well. Wasn't that out a long time ago?? Sheesh, that's a LONG time to have that song going in your head, Jude. Sorry to refresh it. :(

DG--I had to do something to get Crazy Horses out of my head. That video is just plain disturbing! Oh, I'm big on show tunes for cleaning house. The singing is muffled by the vacuum.

Christy--I think there is medication for that. :)

Pricilla--Oh no! All the chickens???! Dead??! Plucked and frozen??! Uh, I'm changing my mind about the farm. Maybe you'll let me slide on the chicken thing??? Please??

Storm--NOOOOOO! You LOVE that song???! Ewwwwwwww.

Sherrie--Hey! Thanks for the birthday wishes. :) Crazy here too with the start of school and all. I agree, the cartoon songs are worse because they aren't really acceptable to sing in public--you strange stares.

Casey--I know how that goes. I know the "Backpack Song" from Dora and I have NEVER seen that show in my entire life. It just sort of crept into my mind and is permanently stuck there! Arrrggghh!

Veronica--YES!!! That is HILARIOUS!! You are funny, pally. Very funny.

Pricilla said...

Not all of them....we still have 16 for egg laying purposes....

WillOaks Studio said...

OMG, this is just too funny!! I get stuck with a ditty in my brain too some days. A good night's sleep and the next day, probably a new and different ditty...ha ha. When I sing along...folks think I'm just a cheery girl, um, well? Fake it til you make it?
