Marching Band Season. Ah, there is just something wonderfully geeky about the whole thing. And what's worse than band geeks? Band parents. Yep, and I wear that title proudly. Count me in the loser category when you've got the last 4 seasons of marching music on your Ipod. There is just nothing that compares to the drum line and twirling flags. Nothing.
Marching Season opens Friday night with the first football game of the year. I don't go for the game--I go for half-time. That's when the fun starts--the band takes the field. And the crowd of boisterous students don't even watch. But I don't care, I'm all about the band and that show that keeps changing and improving with every week.
Fall equals football. Football equals marching band. Marching band equals fun with the kids and other band parents. It is my life for the next 2 months.
It is a happy life.

I love the school activities. To me, it was fall = soccer and how I loved the games and the half time. I'm very envious!!!
YAY for geeky Band Moms like us!! WOO-HOO! :)
Ooohh....I love your band uniforms; they look sharp!
Our colors are blue and white; I'll get a picture and post it as soon as I can!
The band uniforms are so smart!
Someone doesn't sound crabby today.
Trying like mad to get my son to audition for Jazz Band. Though a different brand of band geeks, they are band geeks just the same. My daughter plays the trombone (and actually likes it), so there may be a marching band in my future. I will be sure to consult you for appropriate behavior as I don't always mix well with other school parents.
This post took me back to high school! Although, we didn't have a marching band :( I went to a very small school. But I always wished we'd had one. I would definitely have tried out! Enjoy your next two months as Band Mom!
Jen
We sing the same song.
But, I must teach you a little something. I've been scolded many a times for this...Cardinal Rule: never refer to the color guard as "twirling flags" they "SPIN" flags. Batons twirl, flags spin.
To a winning season!
Our marching band had black and orange uniforms. Black and blue was to descriptive of the football players. It was fun. Except for the time one of the twirlers spun around and hit my trombone slide with her baton. And then there were the band trips. Frequently caused by a stubbed toe.
My Mommeh was in drill team when she was in high school! Halftime shows are fun.
ps: Thanks for asking about my dad. Last Monday was actually his last day of work, so now he's busy working with the career counseling service. He is very lucky to get salary continuation for 16 months, so we hope he can get a good job by then!
I loved it too! We used to travel to band competitions every Saturday and then the State Championship the first weekend of November.
Like you, I hated the football games but I loved halftime.I would watch my daughter perform her pom routine and then she'd run like heck to get into formation to take the field with the band for their show. It was especially fun to see both of the kids together in the band.
Good times! I live near the high school and I when I hear them practicing and the beat of the drums, it makes me so happy.
Go band moms!
I was just telling my son the other day about how I love the sound of snare drums and a good march. He looked at me as if I were nuts. I also played trombone those many years ago. What a great time!
I was on the Drill Team in HS. I love the cadence of a marching band. To this day.
My friend Kellie's son just entered 9th grade and the first game is this Friday. He plays the drums and I am thinking about going. It would be so much fun.
I am wildly jealous of all band geeks and their parents. The orch dork scene is okay, but I never get to go to a football game (where the halftime is my favorite part too :)
i soooo agree....
i'm a band geek...and hope to ONE DAY be a band geek mom.
for real.
Fall is the second best time of year (sorry, I really love spring) LOVE me some football! The band looks really sharp out on the field! Woo Hoo!
Mtn Woman--I love being there in the stands again. It's like being in high school, except I'm in the parent section. Sigh.
A.Marie--We're orange and brown and they really aren't that snappy in person. I can't wait to see yours. It's fun being a dorky band mom, isn't it??
Veronica--Nah--that only lasts for a short time with me. But it's nasty for that short time!! ;)
DG--I flit in and flit out. Not "friends" with anyone, just friendly with all. I keep a smile on my face--it's the key to survival. It's not good to be in a clique in anything I've found. And Yea! Jazz Band!! That counts. My kids are into that too.
Jen--I wish I was in band. Now I know what I missed out on! These kids have so much fun together--it's nice. I love the competitions too, but we only have 3 this year. Bummer.
Jodi--Oh, thanks for the clarification. This is Em's inaugural season so I wasn't hip to the lingo. Mom didn't clue me in on that one! Do you have a baton twirler?? We don't. Thank god.
Chuck--Oh, you are such a card. You need to be dealt with. ;P
Daisy--Hobbes LOVES Em's flag--he tries to grab it when she's "spinning" (note Jodi's comment)it. I think he may have to be the band mascot this year. And he's orange and white--almost the school colors of orange and brown. Cool Mommeh you have there. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Dad. There ARE jobs out there.
Violet--There is nothing like a drumline and the tink, tink, tink of the band director's metronome. I'm glad you know the love of band competitions. I LOVE them! I love how the packed stands are so quiet you can hear a pin drop. Ahh, it gives me goosebumps.
Merry--Yes!! We rock!
Mother Goose--I think you've got to be a part of it to love it. I always yell "Go Drumline!" and my kid plays the trumpet. There is just something about those crab-walking soldiers. Sigh. Love them.
Pricilla--Doesn't it get your heart pumping?? I used to walk to the marching tunes on my Ipod because the beat is so darned fast. I'm finding lots of inner band geeks here. :)
Petula--Are you going to see him march?? Do they compete. I never knew they had band competitions until Col started in HS. Now I am hooked!
Margo--In everything that my kids have done--sports, dance, band, etc--marching band is my absolute favorite. It is just so cool to see a group do something so incredible AND play music. I'm in awe every time they take the field.
Stacie--I would FORCE those kids into band. Hee! Hee! Not really. It is such a HUGE commitment and if they didn't like it, I would imagine it to be hell. Although I haven't known anyone to quit once they start.
I enjoy everything about high school football games. It's a great time and a wonderful atmosphere that I seemed to miss out on during my own high school days when I'd rather be under the bleachers than on them!
Wonderful! Love this post. No kids at home. But, I think maybe my grandchildren ages 10-7-6-2 (and one on the way) may like matching band. My husband was in the marching band and they love their grandpa! Maybe one will follow in his marching footsteps ;-)
School's back after summer.
Our school marching band is awesome. Football team needs a little work, though.
I love the fall.
Hugs,
Sue
No one twirls at my house, just spins...although there is a baton around here I hid, it was at one time being used as the mean sister weapon.
True, band is geeky ... marching band is even worse. But damn it if I don't love me some drum line!
Very cool. I loved watching the band practice at my old school. Never made it to any football games though.
My school was so small, we didn't have a band...just a tuba player and a drum. Sad, huh?
I was always rejected by school bands without ever being given a chance. And there was one jerk kid who would always feel the need to rub it in. I liked watching the band as long as he wasn't in it.
Buggys--Spring is okay too--I like the smell of new things blooming, but to me---those leaves---ahhhhhh. Thank goodness for seasons!
Beaded Tail---Oooooh, now the REAL story comes out!! :) You tramp! (JK)
Katie--I think you can still brainwash those kids. I didn't know this whole world of marching band competitions existed before. It is incredible to go to these. I hope one of the kids has the opportunity to march.
Sue--LOL! Our school is the same! Football team Stinks too! Funny how the band gets little or no coverage for their awards. Ugh.
Jodi--That's wicked! I know a lot of colleges have a baton twirler--but our high schools do not.
Bee--It's a lovable geeky thing though. And the music is just so nice! How can you resist??! Go Drumline!! (I say that and my kid plays the trumpet!)
Casey--Really? You watched the band practice??? Did you have a crush on someone in the band?? It's quirky cool, Casey!
Chocolate--Now that is a weird two instruments to have as a band. Why bother with a band at all?? The only formations they could make on the field would be "snake eyes"!
Ratty--Oh, Ratty, that is very sad. I'm sorry that they didn't allow you in band! What is with that??! Can you believe they would turn someone down?? It's their loss, pally.
Lin, I just looked up on YouTube one of my favorite marching band snacks it aired during Alee's Junior year of HS (she is now a college sophmore). So I'm sharing it with you http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qIbZEaMFvys
